When they arrived on Cyprus, they met Sergius Paulus, the roman ruler of
the island, who was called the "proconsul." The proconsul
wanted to hear the word of God from Barnabas and Saul.
However, the proconsul's attendant, a Jewish false prophet known as Elymas (Bar-Jesus) the Sorcerer,
opposed Barnabas and Saul, trying to turn the proconsul from the faith.
