Matthew 16:18

Jesus asked His disciple who they thought He was.  Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."  Jesus replied, "...And I tell you that you are Peter (which means "rock"), and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not overcome it."  Being called a "rock" showed the steadfastness of Peter.
