Near the end of his life, Solomon built places for his
foreign wives to worship their false gods. This angered God, and God
said he would not allow Solomon's descendants to reign over all of Israel,
but only over some of it. Following Solomon's death, Solomon's son,
Rehoboam, became king of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. But the
ten northern tribes united under a man named Jeroboam and named him
king. Thus the kingdom was divided. The northern kingdom was
called Israel, and its kings were not descendants of Solomon. The
southern kingdom was called Judah, and its kings were descendants of
Solomon and his father, David. Following are some events that
occurred in the early years of the divided kingdom. |
