One of the most important things Solomon did during his reign was to build the first temple of the Lord.  The innermost part of the temple, called the Holy of Holies, was the place where God dwelled.  Only the High priest could go into it, but only after purifying himself, and only once a year.  The ark of the covenant was held there.
